BMC Gears Up To Fight Dengue, Begins Awareness Campaigns

Berhampur: With the detection of first Dengue case, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Health department have swung into action to restrict the spread of the disease.

The civic body along with the district Health office has started cleanliness and sanitation drives on war-footing.

On the other hand, the Anganwadi workers are making door-to-door visits to sensitise the people about the killer disease. A team has also been pressed into service to create awareness through various drives at Sarani Bhandari Street near Bus Stand, from where the first case was reported on Thursday.

The team has also trained volunteers on various approaches and methods of the sensitisation programme.

ASHA workers have been engaged to make people aware of the symptoms, causes, prevention of dengue and the facilities available at various health centres in the city.

Over 74 dengue cases were reported in 2015, while the figure reached 392 in 2016. Apprehensive of further rise in the cases this year, the BMC and the Health department have intensified awareness and cleanliness drives in the city.

Dengue Case Detected In Brahmapur Ganjam

Berhampur: Dengue has resurfaced in Ganjam district with Surya Behera of New Bus Stand area in Berhampur town being tested positive for dengue on Thursday.

Behera reportedly complained of fever and visited MKCG Medical College and Hospital here for treatment on June 21. Later, his blood samples were collected to test for dengue.

After the samples were found positive, Behera was admitted to the dengue ward in the hospital and is currently undergoing treatment, said official sources.

The district administration has planned to carry out awareness campaigns in the Silk city to curb dengue before the virus spreads its tentacles, informed the district malaria officer Uma Shankar Mishra.

"As a routine measure, our staffs have been visiting all the apartments and residential colleges in the town. We have initiated a strong campaign from district to village level to aware people of cleanliness and steps to prevent the birth of dengue larvae," said Mishra.

The deadly dengue has been giving sleepless nights to the State administration since 2010. In 2016, over 7,797 dengue cases were reported while 2,450 in 2015, 6,433 in 2014, 7,131 in 2013, 2,255 in 2012, 1,816 in 2011 and 29 in 2010.

RATH YATRA HELD WITH FERVOUR IN BRAHMAPUR

Rath Yatra was celebrated amid religious fervour at different places in the city on Sunday.

Thousand of devotees dragged chariots carrying Lord Jagannath and his siblings Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra at different Jagannath temples.

Deities were brought on Dhadi Pahandis to chariots amid chanting of slogans and beating of cymbals. After they were seated in chariots, Chherpahnara were conduced. They chariots were pulled by devotees to respective Mausi Maa temples.

The yatra conducted at the Gosaninuagam Jagannath Temple attracted thousands of devotees. Three Raths were pulled by devotees here.

Similarly, the festival was conducted at Bijipur, Pateleswar Temple, Utkal Cinema Road, Military Lane, Mukteswar Temple, Big Bazar- Bada Jagannath Temple and Sano Jagannath Temple.

Police personnel had been deployed to maintain law and order and ensure smooth conduct of the festival at all temples.

BJD leader shot at, critical

Berhampur (Odisha), Jun 25 (PTI) A local BJD leader was seriously injured when unidentified assailants fired at him in his village Badapur in Odisha's Ganjam district today, police said.

Subash Sahu (48), a former samiti member of Kulagada panchayat, was returning home after taking bath in a pond, when motor-cycle borne gunmen shot at him before attacking him with sharp weapons.

Sahu, who sustained multiple injuries, was admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and then shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar where his condition was stated to be critical.

Police suspected previous enmity might be the cause of the incident.

Khallikote PG classes to be held on old campus

BERHAMPUR: Classes for Post-Graduate (PG) courses of Khallikote Cluster University will be conducted in  Khallikote Autonomous College till construction of the new campus of the university is completed. Earlier this month, the Higher Education department had issued a notification that admission and classes of PG courses will be conducted in the autonomous college. Protesting this, several organisations had staged demonstrations.


However, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Manmath Padhy, said the arrangement is temporary till the new campus comes up. The construction of the new campus is underway at Kanishi on the outskirts of Berhampur near Palur Hill over 20 acres of land. The existing campus of the autonomous college does not have sufficient land to conduct classes and other activities. The college has 18  undergraduate and 12 new PG departments with student strength of around 4,500.

GANJAM PEO, HUBBY HELD TAKING BRIBE

Suchitra Kumari Patra, PEO, Gudipadar Gram Panchayat under Digapahandi
tehsil, Ganjam and her husband Birendra Patra were caught red handed
by the Vigilance sleuths of Brahmapur Division, while demanding and
accepting Rs5,000 as bribe.

Widows, A Parbati and R Haramma of Ganjam in order to get financial
assistance from the Government under the Jatiya Pariwar Mangala Yojana
had applied the BDO, Patapur Block. They approached accused Suchitra
Kumari Patra repeatedly to send the inquiry reports to the BDO,
Patapur, but Patra demanded Rs 6,000 from them. However, after
negotiation, Patra agreed to send the reports after receiving Rs5,000
from them. Finding no other option, Parbati reported the matter to
SP, Vigilance, Bhubaneswar.

Accordingly, a trap was laid on Thursday and Patra and her husband
Birendra Patra were caught red handed while demanding and accepting of
Rs5,000 as bribe.

K’MAL BJD READY FOR JUN 21 YOUTH MEET

Ahead of the BJD's June 21 youth convention in Brahmapur, the party's Kandhamal unit leaders narrated various welfare programmes undertaken by the State Government at a Press meet held here on Saturday.

Leaders like Saroj Karna, Duguni Kanhar, MLAs Rajib Patra  and Pradip Pradhan, former MLA Debendra Kanhar and party observer Dhananjaya Reedy addressed the meet.

They claimed that CM Naveen Patnaik has been working for development and social protection of the SC and ST people, farmers, labourers, women, children and the youths. Roads and other infrastructural developments have taken place and the Government is now working to ensure pucca houses to all and provide electricity connectively to all villages by 2019.

A large number of youth activists from Kandhamal district would join the party's proposed youth convention at Ambapura in Brahmapur, they said.

4 HELD IN B’PUR BIZMAN ATTACK CASE

The Brahmapur Bada Bazar police on Saturday arrested four persons for their alleged involvement in the brutal attack on businessman Rabindra Sahu at Sarguna Street Square here on June 13.

They were identified as Santosh Kumar Panda, Alok Dash, Heena Panda and Kishan Behera of Sarguna Street, informed IIC Suresh Kumar Tripathy.

While Sahu was returning home on his motorcycle in the night, some miscreants intercepted and abused him at Sarguna Street. Following a quarrel, they attacked Sahu with a sword, injuring him severely. They snatched away his bike and fled from the spot.

Sahu had to be shifted from the MKCG Medical College Hospital to a hospital in Vishakhapatnam as his condition deteriorated.  

Acting on the complaint filed by Sahu's wife Gayatri, the police conducted investigation. Apart from arresting the accused, the police have too recovered the bike and two swords from them. One of the accused named Bagha is still at large.

The motive behind the incident was past rivalry, said the IIC.
