NATIONAL LANGUAGE MEET IN BRAHMAPUR FROM JULY 6

A National Language Conference organised by the city-based Institute of Odia Studies and Research would be held in Brahmapur this year.

The fourth edition of the conference would be held at the NIST Engineering College in Berhampur for four days from July 6.

In the conference, like earlier years, 600 researchers from language universities and Central classical organisations of the country and State would congregate and deliberations would be held on Odia grammar, translation, computer and Odia language, education and administration and culture,

said Odia Studies and Research president Debiprasanna Pattanayak at a Press conference here on Tuesday.

Stress would be laid to find the reasons for the rise in dissension over neglect of Odia language and its prevention and how to use it as a language of knowledge and development, said Pattanayak.

A website containing information about imminent academicians of the country and outside was unveiled

by Finance and Excise Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera on the occasion of the third preparatory meeting of the organisation.

Three killed, two injured in Ganjam district

Berhampur (Odisha), May 13 (PTI) Three persons were killed and two others critically injured when lightning struck them at Bhatakhali hill in Ganjam district.

Berhampur (Odisha), May 13 (PTI) Three persons were killed and two others critically injured when lightning struck them at Bhatakhali hill in Ganjam district.

The mishap took place while the victims were returning from work at a stone quarry last evening, police said.

The deceased were identified as Narayan Sahu (35) of Subalaya, Sushant Sahu (42) of Kaniara and Bhasi Nahak (51) of Bhejiput, said Inspector In-Charge of Kabisurya Nagara police station, B K Pradhan.

The two persons who suffered burn injuries were admitted to Aska hospital and their condition was stated to be serious, police said.

Ganjam health worker gets award from Presdent Pranab Mukherjee

BERHAMPUR: Krishna Kumari, a health worker from Ganjam district, has bagged the prestigious Florence Nightingale Award 2017 on the occasion of International Nurses Day.

The 50-year-old Krishna received the award from President Pranab Mukherjeeduring a function at Rastrapati Bhawan in New Delhi on Friday. The award carries a citation, a medal and a cheque of Rs 50,000.

She has been working in the community health centre (CHC), Kukudakhandi, in the district. She was awarded for her 18-year-long service in the field of immunization, female welfare programmes, management of labour room and operation theatre. "I am very happy to have received this award. I will donate the award money towards education of orphan children. After returning from New Delhi I will meet the local MLA (Digaphandi) and civil supplies minister S N Patro as well as the chairman, panachayat samiti, Kamakshya Prasad Patra and urge them to set up a home for orphans in the area," Krishna told TOI over phone. Ganjam CDMO Manoj Kumar Behera appreciated her contribution to the CHC.

"She is a role model for others. Her work will inspire others to serve the people," Behera said.

IPL Betting Racket Busted In Ganjam, 8 Held

Berhampur: As many as eight persons, including one bookie, were arrested in Ganjam district on Thursday on charges of betting during the ongoing IPL cricket matches.

As per reports, acting on a tip-off, Bada Bazar police conducted a raid last night at the house of the bookie Srikant Kumar Sahoo in Patra Sahi of Berhampur town.

The police seized Rs 8,33,480 with 19 mobile phones and one calculator and a notebook from the betting den, said Santanu Dash, sub-divisional police officer, Berhampur.

The arrested eight accused have been forwarded to court, added Dash.

Berhampur: Two cases of cholera has been detected in Kabisurya Nagar town of Odisha’s Ganjam district.

A total of 11 stool samples were tested at the microbiology department of MKCG Medical College, said Additional District Medical Officer (Public Health) R Jagadees Patnaik today.

While one cholera case was detected from Kabisurya Nagar town, the other was from nearby Baliasara, he said adding officials had sent the test samples in view of the rampant spread of diarrhoea in nearby areas in the last fortnight.

The disease is believed to have surfaced due to the consumption of contaminated water and the number of diarrhoea patients had grown since April 25. While five patients were admitted in Kabisurya Nagar community health centre on Monday, one was admitted yesterday.

"There is no cause for panic due to detection of cholera. The situation is under control as we have taken several precautionary measures to arrest of spread of the disease," said Patnaik.

Medical officers in the community health center in Kabisurya Nagara have also been alerted and health workers were asked to spread awareness among the people to maintain personnel hygene and to consume the boiled water, he said.

Earlier, cholera was detected from Jagannath Prasad area where dirrrhoea had affected over 150 people in 36 nearby villages after they consumed pana (sweet water) during a festival.

The disease was reported from Polasara and Sanakhemundi blocks recently, Patnaik said adding it was controlled in all the affected areas

Odias Trapped In Saudi Arabia: Admin on Toes after External Affairs Ministry Steps In

Berhampur: After External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj stepped in following a report aired on Odisha Television Limited (OTV) and later published on this platform on kin of Odia labourers from Ganjam trapped in Saudi Arabia seeking help, the district administration has launched a probe to gather information on the trapped labourers.

According to sources, the administration has so far collected information on 12 labourers who were trapped and the district labour department has said that based on the information collected they will be rescued.

"After we received the complaints, we have collected information on 12 persons. As per reports, four are from Rangeilunda, three from Beguniapara and one each from Khallikote, Chhatrapur, Patrapur, Chikiti and Hinjilikatu," said Shiv Narayan Sahu, District Labour Officer.

"We are also receiving more such complaints; hence after we conduct a comprehensive probe we will submit a report to the department and the collector. We will also request the Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia to rescue these persons" said Diptiranjan Mohanty, Assistant Labour Commissioner.

As per reports, these labourers from various blocks of Ganjam district went to Saudi Arabia five months back through an agent from Andhra Pradesh. Reportedly, they were engaged in Al Riyadh Construction Company. However, it is alleged that the company had not paid them for the past 2 months, and has seized their passports. The labourers are also being exploited and threatened, alleged kin.

Following OTV's publication of the report, the External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj asked the Indian Embassy in Riyadh to take action to rescue the workers.

Replying to the report tweeted by OTV, the External Affairs minister from her official twitter handle tagged the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, following which the embassy authorities confirmed on twitter, "Embassy cognizant of it and actively working towards their repatriation."
